Defensin HNP-3 human supports periodontal tissue homeostasis by maintaining epithelial integrity and exerts concentration-dependent effects on epithelial cell proliferation, adhesion, and bacterial adhesion. Defensin HNP-3 human induces DNA single-strand breaks and membrane permeabilization in tumor cells through electrostatic binding and pore formation, thereby targeting solid tumors and leukemia. Defensin HNP-3 human is abundant in neutrophils of human tongue squamous cell carcinoma and invasive oral squamous cell carcinoma.
