Vasopressin is a peptide prohormone in neurous in the hypothalamus, it is synthesized from the AVP gene. It is also known as arginine vasopressin (AVP) or argipressin, antidiuretic hormone (ADH). Vasopressin is a 9 amino acid messenger, it is a peptide hormone in many physiological processes.

AVP has two primary functions. First, it increases the reabsorbed back amount of solute-free water from filtration in kidney tubules. Second, AVP constricts arterioles, then increases resistance in peripheral vascular, and raises arterial blood pressure. In addition, vasopressin can induce the differentiation of stem cell into cardiomyocytes, and promote the homeostasis of heart muscle.
