Ghrelin is a hormone primarily secreted by enteroendocrine cells of the gastrointestinal tract. It is often called a hunger hormone, as it can increase the drive to eat. The ghrelin levels in blood are highest when hungry before meals, then return to lower levels after mealtimes. In addition, ghrelin also can increase gastric motility and stimulate the secretion of gastric acid, in order to prepare for food intake.
